Google Forms: Teacher Teacher, I need you!

Since summer has started, I have a new obsession I MUST tell you about!

Google Forms

I had never used these before. I have filled out several, but never made my own! Right!? I know, I've been living under a rock...
Well, Pinterest (and the fact that we are going 1:1 next year) finally convinced me to try it out. The first one I made came from my friend Amber at {Peppy Zesty Teacherista}. Then I was hooked! I wanted to make more and more! One I am extra proud of is...
This little guy is going to save me and my students so much hassle. Kids know they are not supposed to talk to me when my princess light is on..but they really want to. Sometimes when there is something you really need to say, you HAVE to say it before you can focus on anything else. I've been there, I like to talk. Now when a kiddo needs to tell something (that isn't bleeding, breathing, or barfing), they can scan the {QR code}(the one in my classroom has a QR code right under the little guy's arm!) and it will take them to a Google Form!

Here they will have to tell their name, and what they want to tell me. I also think I'm going to add an option where they can tell me if we need to talk about or if it was just so I knew about it.
These forms are SO easy to change and update. I'm so excited about these!!
I made a super quick video showing you the basics of setting something like this up!
How would you use Google Forms in your classroom?
Next time, I 'll HAVE to tell you what I've got going on Google Forms for progress monitoring!

Behavior Management: Lego Style

This month has been SOMETHING else! For one of my kiddos, my current behavior management system was failing. It was failing me and the whole class. The time had come to rethink my behavior plan of this student.

Kids love LEGOs!
So I rolled with it!
I used Velcro Dots to attach the stand to the wall!
I wrote down all the subjects that we do through the day. (My original plan was every 30 minutes, but thanks to {The Primary Gal's} suggestion, I don't have to worry about time!) For each subject she has a good attitude(or handles her attitude correctly), gets her work finished (or at least shows real effort), a LEGO is earned.
She made a book and a bed for the LEGO man!
There are 10 legos to earn. If one is not earned, she has to earn the next TWO pieces. Then she gets the lost piece back.
Awards and Consequences
Each block is a minute of free time on the iPad. If less than seven (out of ten) blocks are earned, then the student gets extra homework.
The student provided the LEGOs and even though this was our first week using them, I think this plan is going to get us through May! Next week, we are going to start building new things with the blocks. I will still use the labeled ones for myself to keep track, but she will be earning blocks that are more fun and that she can actually create models with. Her mom gets credit for creating the stand for her desk.
Command Strips! Genius right!?

How I Survived the First Week of School

Well we have made it through our first week of school! I am loving my new kiddos! We had a super busy week working on procedures and building our Daily 5 stamina.
We played one game where we passed around toilet paper! This got so many laughs and giggles. They were supposed to take what they "needed" from the roll.  The amount of squares they took were how many facts they had to tell us about themselves. Five squares=5 facts. This was the most they were allowed to take for my kids, I have some stinkers so it wouldn't have ended well if I didn't make a limit!
Students need to get to know their classmates as well as their new classroom. I have my kids become {Classroom Detectives}. This is kind of a scavenger hunt to locate items around the room, such as how many trash cans our classroom has. I set the timer for 8 minutes. This gives students a goal to work for. I make sure they understand the objective of the activity so they don't stress if they aren't totally done after the time limit. This also lets me know about their reading abilities.
We worked through our first set of task cards! It is always exciting to introduce them to task cards. They love that they are able to move around and skip around while doing their work. My {Beginning of the Year Task Cards} cover five different skills. (ABC order, word problems, place value, number order, and pronouns) Another easy assessment to give me some kind of indication of where they are in their abilities.
We also did the wrinkled heart activity from Pinterest! This was great! I had students draw things they loved in their heart. They thought I was totally kidding when I told them to wad it up!! It was so funny watching their faces, some were confused and others were just horrified at the thought at wrinkling up their artwork. (Even though they wouldn't have given a second thought if it would have been homework! LOL) I explained how words and actions can hurt us and cause a wrinkle in our hearts. Those wrinkles are hard to get out, and the hearts really drove the message!
I LOVE LOVE using {Scaredy Squirrel} to start our year. Scaredy Squirrel has so many fears, just like students do that first week of school. These books help us laugh at the silly things he is afraid of, and work through the things the students are afraid of. I love how this gal gave the "me" long curly hair, just like she has! So cute!
We also started to {Get Back in the Groove} with my beginning of the school year book. This book covers several math and reading skills BOY 2nd grade students should know. This helps bridge that summer gap and get their brains thinking again. We are only doing a few pages a day, so far so good!
This week we are diving into our reading series and starting to get our new routine down. It went really well today, even though we didn't quite get to our Daily groups today. I'm pretty flexible with our schedule, so we will try for Daily 5 tomorrow!

They are here: Stability Balls!

They are here!!!!!!

My Donors Choose project was funded right before Christmas, and half of my order came in!! (The other half is on back order...) I'm soooo excited to tell you guys about our new stability balls! I had our wonderful gym teacher blow them up for me. I guess I do not know what 18cm is because they are a lot smaller than I realized, but I think they will work perfect for the shorter kiddos that will need them. I only got five this round.
Before lunch, I gave a big speech over how to use the balls. I used the acronym STAY.

S-sit calmly on your ball
T-Treat your ball with respect
A-Always keep your feet on the floor
Y-Your ball is a privilege
The kids were eager to try them out. As I gave the students their balls, I reminded them of the rules. I have decided that this week, I will just do reminders(unless it is a serious abuse). Next week, when the balls are not being used correctly, I will take them away.
See how small they are!?
I went to Wal-Mart after school for this girly. She NEEDS a ball, but this one is just too little! I got a 55cm one for her to try tomorrow! We have only had them half a day, and I already want a whole class set! When students were out of their "seat" for any reason, their ball had to be tucked under the desk. EVERYONE REMEMBERED!!
I am so proud of how my kiddos handled this totally new experience in our classroom. I hate that the others are missing out. I can't wait to figure out how to get more balls! I just loved seeing them on the desks at the end of the day. It makes the classroom look so much more fun and engaging than those old chairs! I may have to switch out my teacher chair for one... I was a little jealous!

Back 2 School- Behavior Management

This week I am linking up with Mrs. D's Corner and Miss V's Busy Bees for their back to school weekly linky! This week's topic is behavior management. I'm still a newbie on managing more than 20 students at a time. I like to joke that my behavior management stops there.(I have 25 this year so let's hope I can get it together!) Here are some of my tips on managing my classroom.
Whether you are using a clip chart, Class Dojo, coupons, or if you are like me, all three students need a visual. A display of some sort needs to be easily seen inside the classroom. Find out how I use them by clicking my clip chart!
I think seating can make or break your behavior plan. If you place the best, sweetest, quietest girl by her BFF, they WILL talk. Students are social, we just want them to be social at appropriate times! I use Happy Class App to help me in making my seating plan! It is a free program online and is awesome! You can pick which students should never be together, which should be close, which need to be near the front, or back, and if they just need to stay put! For more details, click the Happy Class App button!

This is my favorite(I am so sorry I have been sending you back to old blog posts! I have talked about my behavior management plans alot:) and the kids favorite behavior management tool! There is an app called Too Noisy. It has a free version, but you will want to pay the $2.99 for the full app! It is totally worth it! In the Pro version, when the students get too loud, it makes a horrible, awful, scary noise! (Which can be changed or you can even record your own.) Not only does the screen get black, the " weather" in the app changes and it looks like it is raining! When the alarm sounds, it also "cracks" the screen.
It keeps track of students quietness (not making it go off) and gives them stars for not making it go off for 8 minutes in a row. The minutes can be changed to whatever you want your class to be. I use it to switch my groups too because it makes a fun noise when the students earn a star! When they get ten stars, it is a BIG deal! It does this ceremony thing that the kids love to watch! In conjunction with the app, when they get to ten stars we add a piece to our potato head. When all the pieces are on, we have a party! If you want more details( I know, another link back..)Click the app below!

Summer Stock Up: Behavior Management

Do you Dojo? If you haven't already, you should check out Class Dojo! It is an awesome online behavior management system that is fun for students and effective for teachers. To learn more about the basics of Class Dojo, click the monsters below!

There have been some new updates to the Dojo since my first post about it. The updates are AMAZING!! First, Class Dojo now lets you rate how many points a positive or negative is worth. This is super awesome because we all know bullying is a much more severe action than talking in class. Now with one click, can take up to five points away from students when they are bullying.  I also have changed my talking in class, disrespect, and talking out of turn to more than one negative point. The ones with out the exponent are just one point off.
Along with adjusting the negatives, you can also increase the number of points students receive for positive points!
Last year I loved using Class Dojo, but I often forgot because it was not a constant visual. This year I am adding a behavior chart to work with Class Dojo. While searching on Pinterest (How did teachers do it before Pinterest!?!) I found this awesome behavior tracker from Chasity Gabrielson. It is also a freebie in her Teachers Pay Teachers store!
Click here to head over to TPT and get this awesome freebie!
The tracker is a month long, and uses the most popular behavior chart colors! Students can get points when they move their name up (or flip flop that) and lose points when they move their name down. Here is the chart I have for my room!

Seating Charts

I love moving my room around! I do it at least once a month, if not more. Students love switching seats and sitting by new friends. This is where we have issues. We all those students who should NOT sit near each other, ever... right?!?  Of course you can take a lot of time planning out who will sit by who, but I found an awesome site that takes the work out of making a new seating chart!
Click here to check out the site!
HappyClassapp.com is a FREE automatic seating chart maker. It is perfect for the elementary teacher who only has one class. The difference between the free member ship and the paid one is that amount of classrooms you are able to have, which in most cases is one for elementary! You enter in the number of desks you want and in the arrangement you want them in.
It is set up on a grid system. For my tables, I try to keep a block in the grid apart so the program knows they are not actually next to each other.
Here is where it becomes easy! You can customize your class based on who they work well with, who they don't, if they need to sit near the front or back, or if they just need to stay where they are while the others move! When a student should not sit by another, use the broken heart. If they are ones who should be near one another, use the regular heart! You can change these through the school year based on who becomes best buds or who becomes a bully.

This has saved me so much time over the school year in creating my seating chart. I stick it up on the Promethean Board and the kids love seeing who they are going to sit by!

Lesson Plans

Ughhhhh LESSON PLANS. These may be the worst and most important thing involved with having a classroom.  We know what we want to do, why can't we just DO IT?! Well I guess planning is a great way to keep organized and on track. At the beginning of the year, since I was in a brand new grade, I had to figure out my schedule all over again. Luckily, I had Cass to help me out with this! Once I had my schedule, I had to figure out what kind of template to use for my lesson plans. There are just so many options! Should I use Word, Powerpoint, Excel, a premade template, buy one from another wonderful teacher on TeachersPayTeachers or what? Well after some searching(Thank you Pinterest!), I found an awesome site!
Planbook.com
It was a little confusing at first, but eventually I figured it out! This site gives you a thirty day free trial, you don't even have to give any card information to try it out!  When you sign up, you have to put your classes into the Planbook.

From here you can color code the subjects and put in the times you teach them. Everything you do through the day and week goes here. Specials, subjects, lunch, recess, getting ready to go home..all of it! Then you click back into the drop back menu and head over the templates. Templates are the words that will stay in your lesson plans that you won't have to write over and over and over because they will always be the same! Here is where I can list my groups and not have to list them everyday, I can also make a template for my recess duty day so I always have that reminder. This is also a great place to make very detailed plans for a sub! They will always be there and you won't have to stress about sub plans because they will basically be done, all you will have to do is fill in the blanks! I would soooo rather be at school than make sub plans!!!

After your templates are all set up, you are basically done! When you log in to Planbook, you will see your lesson plan page. From here you can click on the class and just fill in the blanks. You can also alter your template for the specific day if something different is happening. Altering the template from here will only change it for that day. All the other days will be the original template.

When you make a lesson, you also have the option of adding homework, the standards, and any notes you might need to recall. One of my favorite parts is that you can also attach files to the plans! If I attach a flip-chart at home, I can access it at school! It is so convenient! I can also extend lessons, bump lessons back or forward days, and adjust times if I need to. Bumping lessons are great for snow days, as we have discovered this winter! Extending lessons are awesome for Daily 5 when students are working through the same activities each day through the week. All I have to do is change the mini lessons for the day! Your plans can be printed from a PDF file so you can create them, then put them in your teacher binder if you want. I like to keep my plans up on my screen all day, it saves paper and space on my (already messy) desk! You can add events to keep track of special activities through out the school year too.

When I log into Planbook, I am able to see my whole week on one page. I love this!! I can plan my lessons for the whole week at one time! These are printable and you can download them as a PDF if you have to digitally turn lesson plans in.

If you get addicted to typing your plans like we did, you can get a year long membership for only $12.00. We think it is so worth it!!
To learn more about Planbook.com, check out their site. You won't be wasting your time! It is great!

Classroom Management App

I have found the BEST classroom management app! It has worked wonders with my chatty second graders. They love it and so do I! It is called {Too Noisy}.
There is a lite version, which is free, and a pro version that is $3.99. It is so worth it! The difference, well main difference, is the meter. The free one uses the meter to gauge how loud the classroom is. When the class gets too loud, it gets black. Each version has a setting to change how sensitive the meter is.

The Pro version does this and so, so much more! In the Pro version, when the students get too loud, it makes a horrible, awful, scary noise! (Which can be changed or you can even record your own.) Not only does the screen get black, the " weather" in the app changes and it looks like it is raining! When the alarm sounds, it also "cracks" the screen. This version also lets you change the background and the look of the meter.
When students have good sound levels.

When sound levels are pushing it.
The best part about this app is it gives stars for every few minutes ( how every many minutes you want) of the app not going off! I have mine set to eight minutes. The students love earning stars! Each time they get ten stars, there is a star ceremony, which makes a big deal and ceremony noise at the tenth star. When my students get ten stars, they get to put another piece of our potato head on!

When the alarm goes off.

This app is so customizable!
The settings allow you to change not only the sensitivity, but you can reset the counter that counts the times the app goes off. You can also take stars away or add stars manually.  I can't say enough great things about this app! I just love it!

This is so customizable!

I have rewards for the ten starts, but I also have consequences for the amount of times it goes off.
Last week, our first full day of trying it, the alarm went off ten times! I had the students peel ten crayons with zero talking for this. I just have so many ice cream molds for making fun crayons! I need those crayons peeled somehow:)
Today it only went off twice. They owed me one whole minute of hopping in place and one whole minute of total silence.
To find out more, head over to {iTunes} and download the free version for yourself!
